How long does my natural hair need to be in order to get a sew in weave?

I want to get a sew in, but I have short hair. I would want my bangs to be left out for a natural look(they are the longest), but how long does my hair need to be in order for it to stay in and be braided?

3-4 inches at least for a sew in weave. :]
